Tuberous indianplantain is an erect, glabrous perennial 2-5 ft tall arising from a short, tuberous-thickened base and fleshy, fibrous roots. The alternate ovate leaves are thick and firm and may be slightly toothed. Several prominent parallel veins converge toward the summit of the leaf blade. The flat-topped inflorescence is composed of white flower heads with 5 tubular disk florets. The corolla is deeply 5-cleft. The fruit is an oblong achene with a silky pappus.
