Pitcher clematis is a herbaceous perennial climbing vine with a pinnately compound leaf with 5-9 leaflets. The apical leaflet may be a twining tendril. The brownish-purple flowers are solitary at the end of long erect peduncles which arise in the axils of the leaves. The flower is urn-shaped with the tips of the petals recurved. It is named for the U.S. Army surgeon and botanist, Dr. Zina Pitcher.
