High Plains Prairie

Occurring in the high plains of Kansas where precipitation is minimal, the bluegrama-buffalograss type is a true shortgrass area. The terrain is dominated by expansive flat plains with occasional drainage cuts. The area has a cow-calf type livestock operation, and much of the land has been plowed for wheat and irrigation farming. Areas in the region that have been overgrazed are almost pure buffalograss stands with few wildflowers.
