Agrostis perennans (Walt.) Tuckerm. Autumn Bentgrass Habit: Perennials, mostly tufted. Culms: Erect or somewhat decumbent, usually weak and lax rarely stout and tall, 30-100 cm. tall, smooth or nearly so. Blades: Usually numerous, flat, scabrous, 10-20 cm. long, 1-6 mm. wide. Sheaths: Mostly shorter than the internodes. Ligule: Membranous, 3-6 mm. long. Inflorescence: Panicle ovoid-subcylindric, often included at the base, pale, diffuse, 10-20 cm. long, axis and slender branches scabrous, branches spikelet-bearing from the middle, the ultimate ones diverging. Spikelets: 2-3 mm. long, numerous, small, 1-flowered, disarticulating on the keel, persistent, membranous, awnless. Glumes: Subequal, or the first slightly longer, acuminate, hispidulous on the keel, persistent, membranous, awnless. Lemmas: Shorter than the glumes, 1.5-2 mm. long, broad, obtuse, thin-hyaline, awnless or rarely awned, with a minute tuft of hairs at each side at the base. Palea: Obsolete or nearly so. Fruit: Grain about 1.5 mm. long, 0.5 mm. wide, spindle shaped. Habitat: Open woods, open ground, old fields. August-September. Kansas Range: East fifth. Synonyms: Agrostis altissima (Walt.)
