Habit:  		Tufted annuals.
Culms: 		Erect or sometimes geniculate at or near the base, 10-15 cm. tall, simple or branched, rather slender.
Blades: 	Flat, 5-12 cm. long, 1-4 mm. wide, rough above.
Sheaths: 	Shorter than the internodes, loose or somewhat inflated, especially the upper.
Ligule: 		Membranous, 3-5 mm. long, decurrent.
Inflorescence: 	A dense spikelike panicle, finally exerted, the axillary often included at the base,
		about 5 cm. long, 3-5 mm. thick, cylindric.
Spikelet: 	Crowded 2-2.5 mm. long, pale, 1-flowered, flower perfect, compressed, disarticulating
		beneath the glumes, falling from the axis entire.
Glumes: 	Equal, acute, somewhat united at the base, compressed-keeled, ciliate on the keel,
		otherwise sparsely hirsute or nearly glabrous.
Lemmas: 	Broad, 5-nerved, nearly equal in length, their margins usually more or less united
		at the base, with a bent dorsal awn from below the middle, about twice as long as its body.
Palea: 		None.
Stamens: 	Anthers about 0.5 mm. long.
Habitat: 	Moist open ground, old fields and wet places.
