Bromus pubescens L. Canada Brome Habit: Perennial. Culms: Rather stout, 70-140 cm. high, glabrous or pubescent at the 4-6 nodes. Blades: 15-30 cm. long, 5-15 mm. wide, narrowed at base, without flanges or auricles, short-pilose on the veins above, scabrous or smooth beneath. Sheaths: Except the lower 1 or 2, shorter than the internodes; at least the lower, usually sparsely retrorse-pilose. Ligule: Membranous, 1-2 mm. long. Inflorescence: Panicle exserted, lax, nodding, 15-25 cm. long. Spikelets: 4-11-flowered, exclusive of awns 2-2.5 cm. long, almost terete, pedicels 8-20 mm. long. Glumes: 2, sparsely pubescent, persistent, the first 1-nerved, about 6 mm. long, narrow, acute; the second 9-10 mm. long, broader, 3-nerved, abruptly acute, with short awns. Lemmas: Acute, 10-12 mm. long, 5-9-nerved, pubescence nearly uniform, sometimes more dense on the margins, sometimes sparse and short on the back or scabrous only; awn 4-7 mm. long, scabrous, straight. Palea: 8-9 mm. long, about 2 mm. shorter than its lemma, oblong, ciliate. Fruit: Grain furrowed, adhering to the palea. Habitat: Moist rocky woodlands. May-July.
