Habit:  	Tall perennial.
Culms: 		5-150 cm. tall, leafy, erect, solitary of few in a tuft, often somewhat bulbous at base.
Blades: 	Broad, flat, more or less scabrous leaves, 20-30 cm. long, 8-14 mm. wide, tapering.
Sheaths: 	Upper shorter than the internodes, smooth or rough.
Ligule: 	Membranous, thin, 2-5 mm. long, conspicuous.
Inflorescence: 	A large often nodding finally exserted, pale green to purplish panicle, 15-30 cm. long, somewhat
		contracted after flowering, the filiform branches ascending or dropping, the scabrous pedicels enlarged
		at the apex, about as long as the spikelets.
Spikelets: 	5 mm. long, narrow, numerous, 1-flowered, rachilla disarticulating below the glumes, forming a short
		naked stipe below the floret, and prolonged behind the palea into a minute bristle.
Glumes: 	Somewhat unequal, acuminate, scabrous especially on the keel, the first 1-nerved, usually about
		1 mm. shorter than the 1-3-nerved second.
Lemmas: 	Similar, usually a little longer than the first glume, 3-nerved, minutely scabrous, especially
		on the keel, usually bearing a minute awn below the tip, sometimes awnless.
Palea: 		Nearly as long as its lemma, apparently 1-nerved (2-nerved, the nerves close together),
		scabrous on the keel.
Habitat: 	Moist woods.  August-September.
Kansas Range:	East two thirds.
