Echinochloa crus-pavonis (H.B.K.) Schult var. macera (Wieg.) Gould Habit: Tufted annual. Culms: Stout, glabrous, erect to decumbent at the base, 30-100 cm. tall. Blades: Commonly 5-25 cm. long, 4-10 mm. wide, glabrous, margins scabrous. Sheaths: Glabrous, slightly keeled, compressed. Ligule: Absent. Inflorescence: Panicle 10-20 cm. long, erect, rather dense, of several unilateral erect or spreading racemes, lacking long setae among the spikelets. Spikelets: 3-5 mm. long, excluding the awns, 2-flowered, crowded in small clusters or racemes, in two rows on one side of the flat rachis, short-awned (1-2 mm.) or nearly awnless. Glumes: Pubescent with stiff ascending hairs, First glume 1-2.5 mm. long and acuminate, second glume 3-4 mm. long and acuminate or with a 0.5-1.2 mm. long awn. Sterile lemmas: Pubescent with stiff ascending hairs, 2-4 mm. long, acuminate or with a short awn. Fertile lemmas: 2.5-4.0 mm. long, acuminate, with membranous, withered tip. Palea: Sterile palea vestigial or absent Habitat: Moist open places, ditches, riverbanks, waste places and cultivated fields. Kansas Range: Southern one third. Synonyms: Echinochloa crus-galli (L.)
