Mediterranean Lovegrass

Habit: 		Tufted annual.
Culms: 		Erect or decumbent at base, 20-50 cm. tall, freely branching and rooting at the base,
		commonly a glandular ring below the nodes.
Blades: 	Commonly 5-15 cm. long, the upper short, 2-5 mm. wide, flat, rounded at the base,
		upper surface, margins and under surface towards the tip, rough, glabrous or sparsely
		pilose on the upper surface near the base.
Sheaths: 	Shorter than the internodes, slightly flattened, glabrous, or ciliate on the
		margins and pilose or villous at the throat, the hairs sometimes extending along the
		entire length of the collar.
Ligule: 	Dense ring of fine hairs.
Inflorescence: 	Panicles, the terminal usually exserted, open but narrow, 8-15 cm. long,
		the branches ascending or stiffly spreading, few-flowered, spikelet-bearing nearly
		to the base, the axils glabrous; often with 1-3 small axillary panicles, usually
		included at the base.
Spikelets: 	Linear-oblong, 5-22 (usually 12-15) flowered, 5-15 mm. long, 1.1-1.5 mm. wide,
		flattened, grayish-green.
Glumes: 	Acute, scabrous on the keel, the first 1-.13 mm. long, the second slightly longer.
Lemmas: 	About 2 mm. long, 3-nerved, the lateral nerves prominent, obtuse,
		scabrous on the upper part of the keel.
Palea: 		Slightly shorter than its lemma, narrower, obtuse, ciliate on the upper
		portion of the keels, arched, persistent.
Fruit: 		Grain half again as long as that of E. cilianensis.
Habitat: 	Waste places and fields.  Spring to fall.
Kansas Range:	Saline county.
