Habit: 		Tufted annual.
Culms: 		20-50 cm. tall, erect, slender, branching at the very base, simple above.
Blades: 	7-25 cm. long, 1-3 mm. wide, erect, pilose on upper surface near base.
Sheaths: 	Overlapping, crowded at the base, the upper enclosing the base of the panicle,
		pilose at least on the margin, long pilose at the throat.
Ligule: 	Ring of hairs less than 0.5 mm. long.
Inflorescence: 	Panicle diffuse, 10-40 cm. long, with spreading branches, usually two thirds
		the entire height of the plant, oblong-ovoid, the capillary branches spreading,
		the lower ascending.
Spikelets: 	Ovate, only slightly flattened, 2-3 mm. long, 2-4-flowered, on long divergent pedicels.
Glumes: 	2, nearly equal, acute, 1 mm. long, acuminate, scabrous on the keel.
Lemmas: 	Acute, 1.5 mm. long, 3-nerved, its lateral nerves obscure, rounded on the back,
		minutely scabrous towards the tip.
Palea: 		About two thirds as long as its lemma, more or less fringed at the obtuse apex.
Fruit: 		Grain 0.5 mm. long, somewhat roughened.
Habitat: 	Open dry places.  August-September.
Kansas Range:	East half.
