Habit: 		Tufted annual resembling E. capillaris.
Culms: 		15-40 cm. tall, tufted, erect or decumbent at the base, branching above the base.
Blades: 	5-13 cm. long, 2-4 mm. wide, scabrous above.
Sheaths: 	Shorter than the internodes, loose, glabrous except the pilose throat.
Ligule: 	Ring of hairs about 1 mm. long.
Inflorescence: 	Panicle dark-leadish color, 5-15 cm. long, less than half as wide as long,
		less than half the length of the plant, open but not diffuse, the branches short, ascending.
Spikelets: 	Ovate, dark, 2-3 mm. long, 1-5-flowered; numerous, on more or less appressed
		pedicels 1-5 mm. long.
Lemmas: 	Acute, 1.5 mm. long, 3-nerved, its lateral nerves obscure; minutely scabrous.
Palea: 		Shorter than its lemma.
Fruit: 		Grain.
Habitat: 	Moist low or sandy ground. August.
Kansas Range:	East fourth.
