Habit: 		Pale green leafy perennial in clumps.
Culms: 		Erect, slender, rather firm, 30-100 cm. tall.
Blades: 	Erect or ascending, flat or folded, somewhat firm, 15-30 cm. long, 4-10 mm. wide.
Sheaths: 	Except the lower shorter than the internodes, closed nearly to the summit, rough.
Ligule: 	Membranous, 1-3 mm. long, nearly truncate.
Inflorescence: 	Panicle pale green or purple, 10-20 cm. long; branches ascending at the base
		but finally drooping above.
Spikelets: 	Green or purple, ovate or oblong, 3-7-flowered, 3-4 mm. long, mostly crowded
		towards the ends of the branches.
Glumes: 	2, ovate, unequal, about 0.5 and 1 mm. long, usually obtuse,
		both much shorter than the florets adjoining.
Lemmas: 	1.5-2 mm. long, conspicuously 7-nerved, the scarious tip inconspicuous.
Palea: 		Rather firm, about as long as the lemma, the smooth tip inconspicuous.

Fruit: 		Grain about 1 mm. long, oval, apiculate.
Habitat: 	Moist meadows and swamps.  June-August.
Kansas Range:	North half and east third.
Use: 		Of some forage value.
Remarks:	May occasionally contain cyanogenetic compounds.
