Paspalum floridanum var. glabratrum Engelm.
Smooth Florida Paspalum

Habit: 		Perennial, solitary or few from short, stout scaly rhizomes.
Culms: 		Flattened, 1-2 m. tall, leafy throughout, sometimes branched.
Blades: 	Firm, mostly flat, 30-70 cm. long, 5-15 mm. wide, glabratum - glabrous below,
		glabrous or sparingly-hirsute at the base above, margins rough, floridanum - blades
		pilose, especially above.
Sheaths: 	About as long as the internodes, flattened, glabrous or the basal ones sometimes hirsute.
Ligule: 	Membranous, truncate, about 2 mm. long.
Inflorescence: 	Usually exserted, of spreading racemes, thick, usually 2-4 (1-6),
		commonly 7-10 (4-15) cm. long, rachis about 1.5 mm. wide, zigzag.
Spikelets: 	1-flowered, crowded, oval, planoconvex, pale, 3.5-5 mm. long, about 3 mm. wide,
		glabrous, single or mostly in pairs in two rows on one side of a flattened rachis.
Glumes: 	First glume wanting, second and sterile lemma, 5-nerved, about equal,
		slightly longer than the fruit obtuse, slightly inflated and wrinkled.
Lemmas: 	Fertile lemma and palea chartaceous-indurated, with its back turned
		towards the rachis, margins of the lemma inrolled.
Fruit: 		About 3.2-3.5 mm. long, about 2.6 mm. wide, oval, light brown, minutely papillose-striate.
Habitat: 	Low ground, marshes and low, sandy open ground.  May-October.
Kansas Range:	Southeast (Montgomery to Crawford counties).
