Culms: 3-100 cm. tall, compressed, few to several in a tuft, ascending or spreading, more or less purplish towards the base, nodes appressed-pubescent or glabrous. Blades: Yellowish green, 5-25 cm. long, 5-15 mm. wide, rounded at the base, crinkly on the long-papillose-ciliate margin, puberulent on both surfaces, often with a few scattered long hairs, more above than below. Sheaths: Flattened, rather broad, with ciliate margins and villous throat, otherwise all but the lowest ones glabrous. Ligule: Membranous, about 1 mm. long, the white hairs back of it about 2-3 mm. long. Inflorescence: Racemes 2-3 (+), 6-14 cm. long, slender, arching, the axillary ones often wholly or partly included in the sheaths, short racemes commonly borne in basal sheaths, rachis about 1 mm. wide, slightly winged, with a few long hairs at the base. Spikelets: In pairs, crowded or relatively loose on short pedicels suborvicular, planoconvex, 2.1-2.2 mm. long, 1.5-1.9 mm. broad, 1-flowered, arranged in pairs alternately in two rows on one side of a flattened rachis, pubescent in var. stramineum to glabrous and mostly glabrous in var. muhlenbergii. Glumes: First glume normally wanting, the second and sterile lemma about equal, both 3-nerved, midnerve of lemma often suppressed, the glume sparsely to densely pubescent or glabrous, the sterile lemma glabrous to sparsely pubescent. Fertile lemmas: Obtuse, chartaceous-indurated, with its back turned towards the rachis, margins of the lemma inrolled, midrib present in var. muhlenbergii and absent in var. stramineum. Fruit: About the size and shape of the spikelet, pale, shining. Habitat: Sandy soil, both in open places and in woods. June-October. Kansas Range: Throughout.
