Woodland Bluegrass

Habit: 		Perennial with short rhizomes.
Culms: 		Tufted, erect, 30-100 cm. tall, simple, subcompressed.
Blades: 	Blades of the culm 3-15 cm. long, the basal ones much longer, lax 2-6 mm. wide,
		ending in a boat-shaped tip.
Sheaths: 	Shorter than the internodes, smooth or the lower upwardly scabrous.
Ligule:		Membranous, usually about 1-1.5 mm. long.
Inflorescence: 	Panicle 10-20 cm. long, erect, open, the short flexuous branches spreading or
		reflexed in age, spikelet-bearing beyond the middle.
Spikelets: 	2-4-flowered, 2.5-4 mm. long; flat, on slender pedicels, the rachis articulate
		between the florets, the uppermost florets reduced or rudimentary.
Glumes: 	Narrower than the lemmas: persistent, strongly keeled, acute, the first 2-2.5 mm.
		long, 1-nerved, the second 2-2.7 mm. long, 3-nerved.
Lemmas: 	2.5-3 mm. long, obtuse or acutish, 5-nerved, keels pubescent throughout, the
		marginal veins below the middle; the intermediate pair of nerves prominent, usually glabrous.
Palea: 		Shorter than the lemma, 2-keeled and 2-nerved, pubescent on the keels.
Fruit: 		Grain or caryopsis.
Habitat: 	Rich, moist or rocky woods and thickets. May-July.
