Habit: 		Annual.
Culms:		5-35 cm. tall, slender, erect, often decumbent at the base, tufted, freely branching.
Blades: 	Upper shorter, lower, large, 3-9 cm. long, 2 mm. wide or less, scabrous and hairy
		near the base above, smooth beneath, attenuate into a slender point, lower often
		sparsely pilose.
Sheaths: 	Inflated, much shorter than the internodes, often sparsely papillose-pilose,
		especially on the margins.
Ligule: 	Very short.
Inflorescence: 	Panicles spikelets, the terminal 2-6 cm. long, usually more or less
		included in the upper sheath, the lateral enclosed or nearly so, shorter.
Spikelets: 	2.5-3 mm. long, plump, pale, on short pedicels, 1-flowered, awnless, lateral
spikelets wholly included.
Glumes: 	Acute, subequal, the first slightly shorter, more or less scabrous on the keel.
Lemmas: 	Glabrous, usually a little longer than the second glume, acute, 1-nerved.
Palea: 		Acute, a little longer than the lemma.
Fruit: 		Grain free from the lemma and readily dropping off, pericarp loosely
		enclosing the seed, thin and evanescent.
Habitat: 	Dry soil, sandy fields and parking areas.  August-September.
Kansas Range:	East three fourths.
