MAY-AUGUST

Blackeyedsusan Rudbeckia hirta L. (COMPOSITE FAMILY)

Blackeyedsusan is an erect biennial or short-lived perennial 1-21/2 ft tall with highly branched, bristly-pubescent stems. The alternate leaves are usually sessile, elliptic to oblong to oblong-ovate, firmly pubescent, entiremargined or shallow-toothed, and reduced above. The solitary heads are borne on long peduncles which terminate the branches and have long yellow or orange-yellow rays and an ovoid dark brown disk. The fruit is an equally quadrangular achene without a pappus.
